Is Hummus Good For Weight Loss? 7 Incredible Facts

Hummus

Is hummus good for weight loss or is it simply a nutritious snack?

Let’s take a look at the facts:

7 Incredible Facts about Hummus

Fact #1

Great news for people who like hummus. According to a study from the Journal of Nutrition & Food Sciences, people who regularly eat hummus have smaller waists, in fact, eight percent smaller, than people who do not regularly eat hummus.

Fact #2

Hummus contains large amounts of the amino acids tryptophan, tyrosine, and phenylalanine. These three amino acids are known for their ability as being natural mood lifters. They are also known for promoting more restful, satisfying, peaceful sleep. This is extremely important because it is in getting at least 7 1/2 hours of sleep each night that allows our body to properly process fats in the bloodstream. Without proper sleep, cortisol levels rise leading to weight gain and possible metabolic disorders such as diabetes.

Fact #3

Chickpeas, the main ingredient of hummus, is an excellent source of fiber. Often times when women restrict their calories while dieting, they do not eat enough fiber-rich food to reach recommended daily values. A one-fourth cup serving of hummus daily will add two grams of much-needed fiber to daily total consumption amounts. This increased fiber consumption is important as it will keep you feeling full for a longer period of time after eating. This will result in consuming fewer calories on a daily basis and therefore increase the rate of fat burn and weight loss.

Fact #4

Hummus is an excellent choice of plant-based protein. A serving of hummus is high in protein and fiber while being low in fat and sodium. When eaten with a whole grain carbohydrate, their proteins combine to produce a complete protein as well as containing many important micronutrients. Protein consumption is a key component of weight loss. Eating half your weight in grams of protein on a daily basis will assist in muscle growth when weight training. This increased muscle will burn more calories daily, even while at rest.

Fact #5

The chickpeas in hummus contain complex carbohydrate starches that provide a steady flow of nutrients to the body. This helps to prevent spikes in blood sugar levels and leads to more steady levels of energy for an extended period of time after consumption. It is in maintaining a steady metabolism that we keep our bodies in a continuous state of fat burn throughout the day.

Fact #6

Hummus can lower overall calorie intake. Hummus is a very filling food, so a little goes a long way. What this means is that you will get full sooner. This will result in eating fewer calories. And eating fewer calories will lead to more consistent weight loss.

Fact #7

Hummus, thanks to its main ingredient chickpeas as well as lemon juice and garlic, is high in antioxidants for superior age-fighting nutrition. This helps to reduce wrinkles and signs of aging by reducing inflammation. This also reduces the problem of stiff and achy joints and muscles which in turn can lead to increased energy levels and increased levels of fat burn.

  5. Hummus for weight loss – that’s something new to me, but I think it’s a great idea! I am not over 40 yet, but your articles help to put better perspective in healthy weight loss. I actually like the taste of hummus, but I find that I need to eat with other things as it can be rather bland – but that just adds on the calories, right? is there any way I can enhacne the taste of hummus as is? Thanks for sharing this.

    1. Yes, it is true that hummus can be rather bland if eaten all by itself. Personally I like to eat it as a dip with organic baked Tostitos. Thankfully hummus is quite low in calories per serving so adding a few healthy chips can easily be an acceptable option. Of course we still need to account for these calories and be certain to burn them off during the day. A Fitbit fitness tracker makes this a much easier thing to do.
